Luis Alacan is a Panamanian-American composer, orchestrator, producer, songwriter, arranger, and music educator. His recent credits include the feature documentary News Without a Newsroom (2025), which premiered at the Miami Film Festival, and the short film A Birthday to Remember (2024), which earned him the Best Original Score award at the University of Miami’s Canes Film Festival.Luis earned his Bachelor of Music from Florida International University (FIU), where he studied composition with Dr. Orlando Jacinto Garcia and enrolled in courses in electronic music, orchestration, and documentary film scoring. While at FIU, he composed the score for CasaCuba’s promotional video The Soul of our Culture, narrated by Andy Garcia, which received the CASE Silver Award in the Short Video Fundraising and Stewardship category.He continued his training at the prestigious Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he was accepted into the Film Scoring Intensive Program taught by esteemed educators from the University of Southern California and Berklee College of Music. During this time, he also composed music for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ InsiemepergliSDG campaign, promoting global sustainability. Luis later earned his Master’s degree in Media Scoring and Production from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, studying under Grammy and Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera and serving as a graduate teaching assistant.Since then, he has scored projects for emerging filmmakers and animators, including the CalArts short I Don’t Know (我不知道) (2024) and the promotional video My First Kimchi Workshop (2024) for children's book author Yangsook Choi, commissioned by the Korean Cultural Center in New York. He also participated as an auditor for the Joy Music House New York Workshop.Beyond film scoring, Luis arranges video game and anime music for the Miami-based Hyrule Woodwind Quintet. A passionate film enthusiast, he spends his spare time watching Korean cinema and studying the works of composers who inspire him, including Ennio Morricone, James Newton Howard, Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer, Jo Yeong-wook, and Jung Jae-il.
